As the population rate of our planet increases at an alarming rate, more pressure that ever is being put on our energy resources. Natural resources are running dangerously low and aren’t being replaced so they are coming scarily close to becoming depleted and something needs to be done sooner rather than later to buck this trend. For decades now, the car has been seen as the major problem when it came to environmental issues, and there are some scary facts to back this up.
The amount of CO2 emissions in London City in 2006 weighed in at a staggering 9.6m tonnes, the weight of over 208 Titanic’s. Compare that to the figures just released which reveal that it takes over 200 of today’s cars to release the same emission as one little Ford Fiesta back in the 1970’s. Now that is a drastic improvement in eco technology anyone’s book, and one that the motoring industry is rightly proud of.
This infographic presented by MSN and the Ford C-Max really shows how thing have improved:
All cars today are greener, and not just eco cars, fact. We all know the ecological and environmental advantages of driving electric and hybrid cars, but many aren’t aware of the improvements made in those vehicles rolling off the production lines. Eco trims are standard on most vehicles now, these little tweaks such as the start and stop functionality of the engine and the resistance of the tyres are making a huge difference.
This point need to put across to those motorists who hang onto their old cars for sentimental or other reasons. If you have a car such as the old 1976 Fiesta, can you honestly say that you feel okay about emitting the same CO2 as 200 modern cars? Happily most don’t, but there are still some who refuse to part with their own bangers, these vehicles must be kept off the roads, for all our sakes.

“these vehicles must be kept off the roads, for all our sakes.”
I find that a disturbingly narrow minded point of view.
Are you aware of the fact that the vast majority of petrol cars can be run on E85 with little or no modification? (Something commonly done in the states)
Are you aware that my petrol classic Ford will run entirely on alcohol with only modification of the carburettor’s jets?
Do you know what the emission values are for a car running on alcohol, especially in comparison to a “modern eco car”?
Did you also know that the government do not actively encourage conversion of petrol classics to alcohol? The poor availability of alcohol being a distict reason why not to.
Do your homework before writing off the entire classic car industry (with all it’s many jobs) in one fell swoop. There are ways and means of making these “bangers” clean running. It’s just that the government doesn’t want it. Hmm, wonder if the arabs have got anything to do with it….. our oil consuming nation wouldn’t be in their pockets would it?
